A small keyboard instrument, which was the precursor of the pianoforte as a solo or accompanying instrument. The sound is made by little “tangents” which press onto the bottom of the brass string when a key is struck. The sound of the clavichord is quiet and soothing. It is only suitable for chamber performances, and does not substitute for the harpsichord in the opera theatre as an accompaniment to recitative.
